9/28/2018 This event has been cancelled due to deteriorated forecast for widespread and heavier rain and river flow. It will be rescheduled when possible.

Read the full event description, then register if you wish and sign the electronic waiver. Don't forget to confirm your email address after signing.

This event will include a session to teach wet exits and basic rescues in the morning, then break for lunch, and then do a short (3 - 4 mile) beginner paddle on Colorado River flat water (maybe slowly moving).

We will meet at Bay City's Riverside Park at 9:30 a.m. to be in the water at 10:00 a.m. After a shore talk, we will find a suitable location to practice wet exits (falling out of the boat) and proceed to learn how to get back in the boat in deep water. Participants should bring lunch and we will eat around noon. After that, those interested will do a short paddle upstream to an inflatable dam and back (round trip ~4 mles).

According to American Canoe Association rules, all participants must wear a life jacket all the time they are on the water. Paddlers in a kayak with a cockpit should be prepared to wear a spray skirt and do capsizes and wet exits. They should also bring any safety gear they may have, including paddle float, bilge pump, sponge, sling, tow belt, etc. although these are not required. Trip leader will have extras. Paddlers of sit-on-top kayaks should be prepared to capsize and climb back onto their boat with and without assistance. Since we will be upside down in the water, everyone should be equipped with eyeglass strap, floating or chin-strapped hat, and nose clip if needed. Goggles are ok too if you want, although there's nothing to see. Closed-toe shoes are good in case we encounter debris in the river.

Bring lunch and ample water, all in a hatch or secured to your boat. Dry-bag anything you have on or in your boat because it WILL get wet. Sunscreen and shade hat are good. Hazards are the usual South Texas conditions - heat, dehydration, fire ants, snakes, slippery boat ramps, muddy water up your nose, etc.

Directions to Riverside Park:
From Bay City, drive south 6.8 mles on Hwy 60. Turn right on FM 2688 and follow 8 miles into Riverside Park. We will meet at the boat ramp on the river.

Bay City is about 1 1/2 hours from downtown Houston. Beware of construction on Hwy 59.
