Basic VHF radio use, banks of Brooks Lake, Sugarland. May 9 2026, afternoon
About this event
This is an off-water event on the banks of Brooks Lake, next to the Marriott hotel. PFD's and boats not required, but your ACA membership and waiver status need to be up to date.
The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with basic VHF radio use guidelines, and critical features of their personal VHF radios.
The address of the Marriott hotel is 16740 Creekbend Dr, Sugar Land, TX 77478.
Bring a chair, water, snacks, notepad, pen, questions, your radio, if you have one. You do not need to have a radio to attend this course. Hopefully the information presented and discussed will help you chose one suited to your needs and budget. I will have some handouts.
If you have particular things you want to work on please let me know.
Let me know what VHF radio make and model you have, if you have one. Try to come up with a user's manual, either hard copy you got when you bought it, or off the internet
The event will start around 2 PM or at a decent interval after the towing training is finished. If we can start earlier than 2 PM I will notify those not present and negotiate a start time by which you can be present.
If it is rainy, we may be able to use the patio and umbrellas of the Marriott Hotel, but this will need to be negotiated. Have dry clothes to wear if we go inside the Marriott. If you bring your own lunch, it will have to eaten off-premises. Buying lunch from the hotel would be a nice gesture, if it makes sense. We'll play all this by ear,
I want to have a 1:5 instructor:student ratio. There will be no assistant, so head-count will not increase. Another class can be scheduled - let me know if you are interested.
