About this event

Trip Description:  This peaceful natural paddle is surprisingly close to the hustle and bustle of FM1960.  Usually a variety of birds can be seen.  We will put in at the Ponderosa Marina on Huffman Cleveland Rd. just west of FM2100 (aka Crosby Huffman Rd).  The marina asks for a nominal parking fee, $7, and the cars should be safe.  We will paddle upstream several miles and turn around when we've seen enough or can't go any further upstream.  Boat traffic is minimal and virtually non-existent after a mile of paddling.  We can find a takeout on the bayou to eat lunch or eat back at the marina.  The trip is suitable for any kayak or even open boats such as canoes, dories, dugouts, faerings, punts, plastic bottle rafts, pirogues, stand-up paddleboards, or chalupas. This is a good trip for beginners, short and sheltered from wind and waves.

Directions to the Put-in:  Depending on route, the put-in is 30-35 miles from downtown Houston.  From the intersection of FM1960 and FM2100 (Crosby Huffman Rd), head north on 2100 approximately 2 miles and turn left on Huffman Cleveland Rd.  Drive approximately 1 mile to the Ponderosa Marina which is located on the right hand side just before the bridge over the bayou.

Hazards: Parking is good and the cars should be safe. There is a concrete boat ramp to launch from.  The ramp may be slick.  Light boat traffic for the first mile or two.  There will be submerged logs and some low hanging branches along the banks.  This is southeast Texas, so there are the usual snakes, biting insects, poison ivy, cool water, etc. and the rare bears, rattlesnakes, and tarantulas. The water is cool so a set of dry clothes should be carriedin your boat in case of emergency. Remember to dress in synthetic layers for possible immersion. WEAR NO COTTON!
