Rally on the River

Movies & Paddling on the Texas Colorado River

The Bay City Parks and Recreation Department will host a weekend of activities April 19th and 20th designed to get outdoorsy Texans excited about paddling and out on the Colorado River.

Film Fest:  Friday 4/19 & Saturday 4/20 in the evenings. Paddling on the Colorado River is in the morning of Saturday 4/20.

These wet-and-wonderful happenings will take place at Riverside Park (a serene, lushly-wooded campground located at 7330 FM 2668, Bay City, Texas 77414) and include:

  1. The Paddling Film Festival on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 (i.e., a special viewing, under the stars, of a rousing collection of kayaking, canoeing and rafting flicks put together by <paddling.com>, a renowned and respected publishing company).
  2. Rally on the River, April 20 (paddling 4 miles upstream, as a festive flotilla, to Bay City’s unique inflatable dam and back)   Register to will a top grade Greenland Paddle
  3. Informational Booths and Food Trucks
  4. Opportunity for HASK & Members to setup a table & tent. Share paddling experiences and destinations with new friends.
  5. Individuals can set up a gear swap. HASK members are urged to take to lead on this. Could be a great opportunity to turn excess gear into cash.
  6. At this time, camping is two nights for the price of one.

These rare experiences are expected to graciously serve the recreational desires of the paddling community of Southeast Texas and beyond for aqua-oriented exploration, fun and comradery on and alongside this enticing Central Texas Waterway.  For those unfamiliar with the Mid-coast Region, it will concurrently expose them to the endless possibilities for exploring the area’s plethora of stream, bay and offshore waters by paddle craft.

It will also afford movie goers and paddlers the opportunity to enjoy the alluring features of this riverfront park as RV or tent campers as they observe the coming of Earth Day. For additional information email

some small print... 1. Unless club members wish to become more familiar with the Colorado, I (Willie Younger) suspect their interest in the Rally as a worthy paddling outing is of only modest interest, especially for experienced kayakers.
2.  But maybe the chance to win a top grade Greenland paddle, commune with fellow advocates while camping at an attractive riverfront park at a discounted rate and viewing two evenings of kayaking films showcasing numerous exotic destinations would be alluring…especially if an organized club outing was promised on a nearby water body on Sunday?
3. My desires center on: a) making the paddling community of SE Texas keenly aware of the rally and film festival, and b) promoting the prospect of a club trip leader (e.g., in HASK, HCC, or jointly etc.) scheduling a Sunday trek on the bay or a neighboring stream. All happenings might be billed as ‘Earth Day‘ experiences since this annual observation unfolds on the following Monday (04-22)?
4. Regarding the sharing of more details, I believe the parks department director intends to supply these directly IF she can obtain the names and email addresses of club communicators (thus my request for HASK, PACK and HCC contacts). The final plans will soon be revealed and, hopefully, freely shared.
5. Could the dates on the club’s calendar of events be corrected (my bad)? Film Fest is Friday and Saturday nights, April1 19 and 20 and the Rally to the dam and back is on Saturday morning, April 20. Sunday, April 21 is open for whatever is desired
6.  As I understand it, the BCPRD is to offer Rally/Film Fest participants two nights of camping for the price of one. The City’s tourism guru is pursuing discounted lodging in town as well.
